We actually had a winter this year. For those living in the Northeast, this was an oft spoken phrase over the last few months. After a very mild Fall, we had 3 months of relatively cold weather in the Northeast, especially when you compare it to the last couple of years
After a cold first week of March, it felt like we turned a corner. Two days touching the sixties, and my Apple weather app tells me we’re unlikely to dip much below freezing anymore even at night. It may be too early to pronounce Spring is here, but there is a noticeable change. With a toddler in the home, this has been a winter of multiple ear infections, days spent wiped out by norovirus, and the perpetual runny nose. Some warm weather and the departure from Winter is welcome. I’m generally a fan of Winter, but this year I am especially excited to welcome Spring and focus on spending more time outdoors.
Around this time each year, I am struck by just how quickly things change. One week I am standing on the train platform freezing hopping up and down to keep warm. Literally the next week, the sun is shining, and I have shed the majority of my outer layers. One week, the scrubbery is barren and lifeless; the next, little buds are present and on the verge of sprouting. It is a reminder that life moves quickly and while it can feel like a season or moment is dragging on or will never end, change is constantly happening all around us. My two-year old who just started pre-school this year managed to ask me when he would be big enough to go to the next school down the street that houses kindergarten and the elementary grades. I told him he’ll be there soon enough but not to get too big too fast. I want to savor the changes and make sure I don’t miss anything even when the days can seem long.
